Car wash

On Friday we had a lot of fun washing cars (as part of our topic on Transport)

The cars were looking a little grubby, so the children put them through the car wash, using the foam to clean them, and then rinsed them off. Well done girls and boys, great cleaning!

Healthy Food

As part of our topic on gardening, we have been talking about which food which get from plants.

Today the children had the opportunity to talk about healthy eating with Miss Meade, and to try some healthy foods – this included pepper, tomato, mango, apple, banana, pear, red onion, carrot celery. Many of the children tried most of the foods, we were really proud of them.

Plants and gardening topic

We have had a lot of fun so far this term learning about plants and gardens. Here are some pictures to give you a flavour of what we have been doing.

This is the role play area set up as a garden centre

We did some observational drawings of flowers

The small world table was set up as first a nature garden, and then a flower fairy garden . . . the children have really loved making up stories in this area and getting into character

We planted ‘beans in bags’ and have hung them on the window. We are hoping that they will all grow and we are checking daily for any changes!

Finally, today we set up the sensory table as a wonderful, gloopy, green petal garden. The children had so much fun playing in it, as you can see!

We have also been painting with celery and carnations, been counting and matching flowers to vases and created a ‘flowers in vase’ picture.

This week we have had a lot of fun with our mini-topic, pirates

We have been listening to pirate stories, playing pirate games, doing pirate puzzles, digging for treasure in the sand, dressing up as pirates, chalking pirate flags, making boats and seeing if they float or sink, to name just some of the activities that have been going on!

I am sure your children will have lots to tell you about this week, but here are some pictures if you’d like to see it for yourself!

We will be doing some more activities related to pirates next week, and also thinking about Easter.

Cookie the rabbit visit

A couple of weeks ago Cookie the rabbit visited us in our Nursery classroom. Here are a few photographs of him with the children. The children really enjoyed his visit and we had lots of really interesting conversations about how to care for a rabbit (and other pets).

There are more photographs on the ILD so don’t forget to check that, too!

Bug table

As we have had a caterpillar in class, we have been talking about and thinking about caterpillars, butterflies and other insects.

Our sensory table was set up as a ‘bug table’ with different bugs, grass, mud, leaves, twigs etc. for the children to explore and use their imaginations. It was a lot of fun.

We also buried bugs in the sand for the children to dig for and find.

Foam fun

Today we had out one of our favourite activities on the sensory table – the foam fire.

The task was to put out the fire with pipettes and water.

The activity is great for fine motor skills, eg pencil grip. The children also just really enjoy experimenting with, and handling, the foam and pipettes. Apologies if any of the children came home with some foam on their coats, it should wash or wipe off easily.

Monkey Puzzle

As part of our topic looking at Julia Donaldson books, we have been looking at Monkey Puzzle and thinking about the jungle and what you might find there.

Last week we had a ‘jungle table’ set up which the children thoroughly enjoyed; we also did step by step snake drawing, set up a vets corner (where we could take poorly pets or wild animals!) and made feather parrots and hanging snakes in the craft area.

Here are some photos of our jungle week.
